Security during the summer holidays

SUMMER….HOLIDAYS….SECURITY

It’s supposed to be summer, but as we can see from looking out the window, it’s a little grey and dreary out there at the moment, meaning more people will be jetting off to get some well deserved sun this summer!

We all get a little distracted when getting ready for our holidays but it’s important to remember to keep your property safe by undertaking some simple fire safety and security precautions:

Fire safety precautions:

  • Make sure you unplug all unnecessary electrical appliances
  • Turn off water mains – a leaking pipe or cistern could short out electrical wiring and cause a fire
  • Switch off all gas appliances that are not required whilst you are away
  • Smoke alarm check time! (this should be a weekly task but it’s extra important to check before you leave your property for any length of time
  • Close internal doors, should there be a fire, closed doors with contain the fire
  • Make sure you let a neighbour or relative that you are going away and leave them a key

Security:

  • Security lighting will help to prevent potential thieves from hiding around your property
  • CCTV cameras are a great deterrent in keeping burglars at bay, it’s worth the investment
  • Don’t leave your TV / Computer / stereos visible, this can encourage thieves into your property
  • Secure tools in your shed with a sturdy padlock
  • Ensue your side gate is padlocked and sturdy
  • Don’t leave your lights on – invest in automatic timer switches.

Before you leave to jump on a plane or take a great adventure, make sure you take five minutes to have one last thorough look around and double check you have all fire precautions and security in place.

And finally, close the door and enjoy your holiday!
