IP Ratings
The International Protection code, commonly known as the Ingress Protection code (IP) indicates the protection afforded by an enclosure against the ingress of foreign (solid) bodies and ingress of moisture and liquids. The IP rating also classifies the protection given by an enclosure against touching live or moving parts.
The IP rating is given by the use of two numbers
First Digit Level of protection against solid objects, materials or dust |
|
0 | No protection |
1 | Protection against soild objects down to 50mm |
2 | Protection against soild objects down to 12mm |
3 | Protection against soild objects down to 2.5mm |
4 | Protection against soild objects down to 1mm |
5 | Protection against dust, limited ingress (no harmful deposits) |
6 | Totally protected against dust |
Second Digit Level of protection against water and other liquids |
|
0 | No protection |
1 | Protection against vertically falling drops of water (e.g. condensation) |
2 | Protection against direct sprays of water up to 15º from the vertical |
3 | Protection against direct sprays of water up to 60º from the vertical |
4 | Protection against water sprayed from all directions — limited ingress permitted |
5 | Protection against low pressure jets of water from all directions — limited ingress permitted |
6 | Protection against low pressure jets of water, limited ingress permitted (e.g. ship deck) |
7 | Protection against the effect of immersion between 6 in./15cm and 3ft/1m |
8 | Protection against long periods of immersion under pressure |
