Flame Retardant Diffusers

Buildings Regulations – Approved Document B Volume 2 (2007)

Building Regulations require that where a flat prismatic diffuser is installed in a building they must be Flame Retardant so as to inhibit the spread of surface flame in the following circumstances:-

  • Where they are used in escape routes
  • Where they are used in areas of over 30m2 (non residential)
  • Where they constitute more than 50% of the ceiling tiles

Please note: The use of flame retardant diffusers does not negate the requirement for a fire box over the back of the fitting if that is specified. The two pieces of equipment are used to control two completely different threats in a fire situation.
