Building Regulations

To ensure specified luminaires meet the requirements of the current building regulations it is important to consider all the relevant legislation. The most common of these are:
Approved Document B
  • Approved Document B (Fire safety) – Volume 1: Dwelling Houses (2006 Edition)
  • Approved Document B – Volume 2 – Buildings other than Dwelling Houses (2006 Edition)
Part B deals with the fire safety requirements for emergency lights and the use of thermoplastic materials.
Approved Document L
  • Approved Document L1A: Conservation of fuel and power (New Dwellings) (2010 Edition)
  • Approved Document L1B: Conservation of fuel and power (Existing Dwellings) (2010 Edition)
  • Approved Document L2A: Conservation of fuel and power (New buildings other than dwellings) (2010 Edition)
  • Approved Document L2B: Conservation of fuel and power (Existing buildings other than dwellings) (2010 Edition)
Part L requires that energy efficient lighting is installed in both domestic and non-domestic dwellings, existing, new & refurbished (over 100m2) Part L gives design information for the following (non-domestic dwellings).

  • Selection of lamp types
  • Effective use of daylight
  • Control gear & power factor correction
  • Use of lighting controls
  • Luminaire efficiency

It is our recommendation that reference be made to the latest version of the Approved Documents. Full details can be found on:
